Summary: Exodus 21:1-6 The passage where God gives the first ordinance of the law, what to do when a servant is allowed to go free, but wants to serve his master for life. A few principles from this passage. 1. The love of the servant. An overarching characteristic in this passage. We need to have love to be a servant of God. God 2. The choice of the servant. The servant chose to serve his master for life. It was a willing, voluntary choice. We need to choose to be a servant of God. Again, it is a personal choice. 3. The commitment and sacrifice of the servant. (Had already served for 6 years.) Willing to give up his right to freedom. We need to choose to commit to follow Christ for our entire life! Give up our old man, our flesh. Sacrifice our personal agenda for the good of the group. 4. The identity of the servant. He took on the identity of the family, and he was identifiable by the scars on his ear. We find our identity in Christ. I need to be identifiable as one of Christ's. 5. A servant for life. This ceremony was only the beginning. Now he had a life of service to live. Same for us today. We have important events/ceremonies in our lives as Christians (New birth, baptism, communion etc.) But more important than these is how we live after that. How will I allow the communion service today to affect me for the rest of my life?
